Sustainability

Fashion is the third most polluting industry in the world and we have a responsibility to change that. Over the last few years Kat Maconie has been stepping on a more sustainable road, trying to improve the environmental impact of the footwear production, step by step. The journey is far from over, and we are dedicated to do better and bring many improvements along the way.

STEP 1: DURABILITY

Kat Maconie shoes and accessories have been designed to perform and look good for a looooooong time. To take care good care of your Kat Maconie product and ensure its longevity, don't hesitate to refer to our 'how to care' guide here.
In case you product does not perform as well as expected or you noticed that something isn't right, our customer service team is here to advise you, no matter when or where you purchased your product. Cats have nine lives and so does your Kat Maconie item. Please think of gifting, donating or re-selling your KM shoes and bags, so someone else can continue enjoying them.

STEP 2: MATERIALS

The choice of material plays a vital part in the durability of our products. Shoes and bags we design have to look good, feel good and be good. Therefore, materials are selected for their beauty and sturdiness. We ensure that the manufacturing process is limiting waste as much as possible by reusing materials and trims where possible. In AW20 we introduced our Le Clique line featuring original leather-free creations in a sophisticated palette to enhance your style. We are also committed to no longer use the following materials, due to their negative impact on animal and nature welfare: fur, angora, exotic skins and feathers.

STEP 3: PEOPLE

Sustainability also means caring for others, starting with the people you work with. We manufacture our shoes and accessories in family run, boutique factories in China, that ensure the best craftsmanship as well as a fair, caring and safe environment for workers. Our design and production team travel twice a year to China in order to visit manufacturers and suppliers to meet the amazing women and men that make our dream design a reality. During these visits the quality of the production as well as the working conditions are closely monitored to ensure that our values stay aligned.

STEP 4: Packaging

We usually don't do minimalist - we prefer extraordinary - but when it comes to our packaging, less is more. From the tape to the protective stuffing, everything we use to pack your online purchase is completely recyclable. The shoe box itself is also recyclable, and we're constantly finding new ways to reduce the amount of plastic use to protect the shape and material of each item. If you're buying in our store, we will provide you with a lovely paper bag, but if you want to go the extra mile, don't be shy: you are more that welcome to use your own reusable bag.

STEP 5: PAPER

Printing return labels and invoices  for every order meant we were sending out over 40,00 pages of paper on average a year, most of which were not needed as only a small proportion of orders are retuned or exchanged. As we work towards a more sustainable future, we have now switched over to paperless (email) invoices and online returns meaning we email the order invoices and only print return labels when required.  If you need  arrange a return simply email returns@katmaconie.com for a copy of your return label and instructions on how to book a home collection.

STEP 6: EMMISSIONS

Beginning  May 2021 we partnered up with Shopify Offset, an initiative to help us measure and work towards offsetting the emissions of all our online deliveries. The initiative works by investing in the Jari Pará Forest Conservation Project in the Amazon rainforest by Pachama, it covers 496,988 hectares of tropical forest in Brazil, protecting more than 2,400 species of flora and fauna within it.Pachama believes its essential not only to plant new trees, but also to protect existing ones. "New trees take years to develop their carbon-absorbing powers; mature forests are already doing the job."  Since May shipping our orders  produced 11.6 metric tons of CO₂ this is equivalent to:

4,965.4 litres
