MOROCCO

It’s been busy here at Kat Maconie HQ, so where better place to escape to after wrapping up for the season than Morocco.

Here our design team describes their adventures.

Marrakesh

Marrakesh was the first stop in our Moroccan adventure and it did not disappoint.
The Moorish architecture infused with Andalusian accents, immediately made us forget about London and get lost in the complex colours and labyrinthine of the Medina.

Where we stayed

Riad Jardin Secret

A boutique Riad, bought to life by creative duo Cyrielle and Julien, two Parisians who have a serious design eye along with the ability to build a refuge of peace and inspiration. The attention to detail, from the perfect hue of terracotta hiding behind an army of plants on the pink rooftop, to the sprawl of complex patterns gleaming under our feet, the thoughtful atmosphere was magic. With only 6 rooms, and 2 resident dogs we felt at home straight away.

Where we ate

Le Jardin

Of course, we spent hours wondering through the medina, looking at trinkets, getting inspired by all the local artisans. Le Jardin was the perfect place to stop for food, located in a 16th Century building, as you walk through the unassuming door and enter the garden you feel balanced and calm again.

The Breakfast menu was our favourite, fruit platters resembling the patterns of Moroccan tiles, to seriously good pancakes- there is plenty of choice. The design is very much in the spirit of the 1960s and 70s heyday of Marrakech, a combination of Moroccan and European chic and for those who are daring we recommend the pigeon pie!

What we did

Hammam De La Rosa

The Hammam, giving us serenity from the chaos outside in the heart of Marrakesh. We spent one afternoon escaping the heat and noise and went for the full works. Highly recommend their massages - the dimly lit rooms, smell of honey and organ oil makes you instantly relax.

Essaouira

Essaouira- translating to little picture in Arabic, and that it is. This laid back seaside town was a nice contrast to Marrakesh.

The mini medina with its white weathered walls, lifted up with pops of the deepest kind of blue – gave us the perfect excuse to wonder aimlessly. The Jewellery Souk and art quarter were great discoveries.

Among all the cafés and restaurants, we gravitated towards the street food. One of the lovely locals led us to a boat on the shore, where we bought the freshest fish which was a welcomed change from tagine!

From the whirlwind of Marrakesh, to the chill vibes of Essouria, Morocco swept us up in an overabundance of colour and texture…and we liked it.
