Pilar Zeta is a surrealist illustrator and art director who harnesses the power of lunar cycles and sacred geometry to create works that have an infinite and spiritual quality. Scrolling through her Instagram is an enlightening and sensory experience, where you are invited to enjoy anything from pieces focused around shimmering celestial energy to vibrating ‘liquid geometry’.
Pilar’s work is a pleasing adventure into semiotics and hidden meaning. You only need to check out the album artwork and the stunning visuals created for Coldplay’s ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ LP to see this in action. She was approached by Chris Martin and Phil Harvey to collaborate on the project which she describes as, “Fantastic and so random! It was definitely meant to be…”
Music is familiar and warm territory for Pilar who has applied her magic touch to album artwork for Machinedrum, Berlin institution Berghain Panorama Bar and has a long-term creative partnership with mystical creative and beatmaker, Jimmy Edgar. Pilar reflects, “A year after Jimmy and I met we decided to take a trip to Machu Pichu. We were so inspired by the mysticism and the culture that we came up with the idea of doing a record label [Ultramajic] where the art reflects a lot of the symbolism and teachings of ancient cultures. The label has a very strong and colourful aesthetic that works in perfect harmony with the music.”
The Ultramajic label features some truly stunning and surreal concepts for genre bending electronic artists (Jimmy included) like Chambray, Lando and Crystal Bandito. Pilar says that at the heart of this creative partnership is a passion to make it exciting. “Each artwork has a different topic and we make sure that it has a twist of fun and magic.”
Magic, ancient philosophy and the metaphysical all feature highly on the things that make Pilar tick, she also cites mediation as essential to her everyday existence, “I meditate very often. I try to do it every day. The more I practice, the more I feel amazing. I try to stay in meditative state of mind all the time by enjoying every moment and doing things very slow. When I practice this I feel like I’ve been meditating all day and my mind is very calm.”
A sense of balance across everything she does is key, from curating projects with mainstream musicians and beauty brands (watch this space). Pilar’s ability to create work that resonates with the more discerning and mainstream audiences is what makes her graphic work and composition so compelling.
