Nothing beats the feelings of strapping on your summer sandals for a weekend of pure unadulterated festival hedonism. We’ve cherry picked five festivals in the UK and further ashore with incredible musical line-ups, food and immersive experiences. From Balearic beats in stunning architectural settings to getting hosed down with a glitter cannon, it’s time to assemble your team, pop on your sliders and get ready for festival season.
This Spanish festival in the heart of Barcelona attracts an international crowd of forward thinking music lovers. Sonar is split across two venues with a location in the city during the day and in a vast rave space on the outskirts by night. Taking place over three-days, this year you can get down to the sounds of Kelela, Four Tet, Eats Everything and Bicep under the blissful Basque sky. Be sure to book an extra day either side to ensure time to explore, chill on the beach and eat some tapas. And, if you don’t want to commit to an official Sonar ticket, fear not, for there are myriad parties taking place around the city at local clubs, outdoor pools and beach parties. Get a full run down for OFF:Sonar parties here.
Taking place in the epicenter of one of London’s hippest areas (Victoria Park), Lovebox is one of the city’s most infamous outdoor parties. The two day event attracts a crowd of London’s best dressed fashionistas and up-for-it ravers, and provides excellent people watching. There’s a 10:45pm curfew so we recommend you get there early to make the most of acts like LCD Soundsystem, Diplo, Jamie Woon and Jackmaster. You should also bring a little extra cash to sample freshly muddled cocktails and some of London’s best street food.
Love Secret Garden Party but can’t get a ticket? Want something with all the dress-up and excitement plus an extra edge of enchantment? Then Wilderness is the one for you my friend, with its banqueting tents, pop-up talks and parties in the woods, you’ll feel like a naughty Tatiana. The rave is there for the taking, you’ve just got to work a little harder to find it, or better still, create it yourself with your own spangly fairy squad.
Dimensions Festival, Croatia
We are very much fans of combining a festival excursion with a holiday. Croatia is a place of natural beauty with affordable food, drink and loads of great electronic music festivals. Dimensions could be the answer to your prayers, with an intelligent electronic line-up – it’s the cooler cousin of Outlook festival – think lads on tour – which happens a week later. Cruise on one of the many boat parties or enjoy the sounds of Moodymann or Massive Attack in a stunning ancient amphitheatre as the sun sets across the Baltic Sea. Perfection.
Bestival, Isle of Wight
There is nothing more exciting than boarding a ferry to party, and Bestival on the Isle of Wight is well worth the choppy ride. Curated by husband and wife combo ‘The Da Banks’, this year they have the world’s biggest bouncy castle, Fatboy Slim playing in a seven story rocket and the Chuckle Brothers. Bestival, for the uninitiated, is a fully immersive event with parades, arts and crafts and boutique stages. Fancy dress is essential, if you plan to go this September make sure you dust off your neon catsuit and in preparation for ‘the future’ fancy dress theme.
